This week in Rumour Patrol we look at the future for The Wachowskis, Alien and Kick-ass. Plus, an Astro Boy reboot?

In Rumour Patrol we look at the biggest rumours from the previous seven days and comment on whether we doubt or hope they are true.

Rumour Patrol: New Alien film?

No more big budgets for The Wachowskis

Hope

Recently in an interview, The Wachowskis stated:

We’ve been lucky. People at studios have been interested in our crazy, strange brand of complexity. And we’ve been allowed to keep making them. Will that continue? Probably not.

After the supposed flop of Jupiter Ascending, which had a budget of $175 million and has barely made $100 million worldwide, as of writing this article, the future of The Wachowskis looks bleak.

I don’t see Warner Brothers giving them the same budget as previous projects, and I hope they don’t. Let’s give some of that money to upcoming directors who have some great ideas.

Rumour Patrol: New Alien film?

Astro Boy reboot…?

Doubt

Now, there is a team of producers that are attempting to make this work. There is currently no director or actors attached, but they want this happen.

With the last Astro Boy costing $65 million and making only $40 million worldwide, I don’t see how this is a good idea. Even if they change it up and make it live-action, I can’t see this working.

Rumour Patrol: New Alien film?

Neill Blomkamp to make new Alien film

Hope

District 9, excellent. Elysium, not so good. Chappie? Who knows, let’s see. What all his films have in common however is huge ambition. As long as Neill Blomkamp brings the same enthusiasm as he does with all his other projects, we could have a spectacular story on our hands.

Rumour Patrol: New Alien film?

Kick-Ass spin-off film in the form of Hit-Girl

Hope

If I had only seen Kick-Ass 2, I would have been against this. After seeing Kingsman, I am totally on board as long as Matthew Vaughn is directing. If they decided to go down the prequel route, having Big Daddy back and a younger Hit-Girl would be awesome to see.

Rumour Patrol: New Alien film?

Angelina Jolie to direct Captain Marvel

Doubt

A top actress turned film director taking the helm of the first female-led Marvel movie sounds great. However, Angelina has only directed two movies in her career. She doesn’t have the experience for such an important film.

A female director needs to direct this film, definitely, but a great female director like 2-time Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow.

That’s it for this week. What do you guys think? Are you excited for any of these rumours?
