Introducing a new weekly segment to Third Act, Rumour Patrol. In Rumour Patrol we take a look at the biggest rumours of the previous week, and comment on whether we doubt or hope they are true.
This week in Rumour Patrol: the return of J.K. Simmons into the Spiderman world, a possible sequel for Unbreakable, Joss Whedon’s future after leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe and suggested directors for Cowboy Ninja Viking.
On the Howard Stern show J.K. Simmons was asked whether he would return to the Spiderman franchise, to reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson. J.K. Simmons responded with:
I just heard that we…that’s a possibility.
We want this to be true, J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson is one of the best castings in comic-book movie history, on par with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. After his stellar performance in Whiplash, which has landed him an Oscar nomination, an appearance from J.K. Simmons can only benefit the Spiderman franchise.
The fantastic Unbreakable was the comic-book film before comic-book films became a big deal. It ended on a trademark Shyamalan twist, and had two top actors playing the lead roles; Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis. The film has an ending that leaves room for a sequel, however my issue with this is not the film, it’s with the director. M. Night Shyamalan is bad news for films, to the point where his latest project has been self funded. He’s even had to hide his name on the trailers for his recent films, because there’s so much bad blood.
The only way I can see this happening is if the product was passed to another director. Perhaps someone who has recently opened themselves up to lots of free time?
This leads me to the next rumour.
Joss Whedon has announced recently that he’ll be stepping down from the Avengers, after a five year stint working on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with Digital Spy, Joss Whedon explained that he would love to make a new superhero story. He was hoping to do a story based around a female character, with a similar vigilante vibe to The Dark Knight.
This needs to happen. In the same interview, Joss Whedon went on to explain how he feels Hollywood is against female lead superhero films. Sure, there is Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman coming out soon, but what other female superheroes could hold their own in a solo movie? I think creating new characters and new heroes is a great idea.
The film Cowboy Ninja Viking has already got Chris Pratt on board, next in line is to get the director. David Leitch and Chad Stahelski have supposedly been offered to job of directing this insane comic-book to movie adaptation. They directed John Wick, a fun, action-packed revenge story that did respectably in America, although it’s yet to be released in the UK.
We were already sold when Chris Pratt was signed, having these two directors on board also would be amazing.
That’s it for this week. What do you guys think? Are you excited for any of these rumours?
