Ride Along was a surprisingly good comedy back in 2014. It had a very simple premise, as most good comedies do, and the two leads had great chemistry. Here we are two years later, the two leads are the same, and the premise is very similar, but it is a comedy sequel, something notoriously difficult to get right. So while expectations are measured, hopefully we’re in for another nice surprise.

Ride Along 2 reunites us with officer James Payton (Ice Cube) and Ben Barber (Kevin Hart), who after his first ‘ride along’ (get it?) is now training to become a police officer himself. The two of them head to Miami in an attempt to take down a major drug dealer that’s been supplying their home city Atlanta. They’re joined by newcomers to the franchise, Miami officer Maya (Olivia Munn), and computer hacker A.J. (Ken Jeong).

Ride Along 2 Review
From this picture alone, it’s impossible to see how this isn’t the best film ever

I’ll get this out-of-the-way quickly – this is very much a comedy sequel in all the wrong ways. The script feels like a rerun of the first Ride Along, the jokes and chemistry between the characters feel forced and certainly aren’t funny, and everything about it feels like a cash grab. It also features something I hate in a comedy, something that’s always a sign of desperately trying to make the film long enough – an animal attack. I love Kevin Hart, but watching him being chased by a horrible CGI alligator isn’t fun for anybody.
