This post is part of the Casting choices series.

Warner Brothers are well on the way to building their DC cinematic universe, with the majority of the Justice League having already been cast. The only core member yet to be cast is Green Lantern, and perhaps that’s for a good reason. Not only is Green Lantern a difficult character to bring to life on the big screen, but they’ve already tried once in the form of the much maligned 2011 film.

That film focused on Hal Jordan, possibly the most popular Green Lantern in the comics, and while it’s likely that the rebooted universe will focus on Jordan again, they have plenty of other choices they could go for. While Green Lanterns Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner have their fans, the character I believe we’re next most likely to see put on the ring is John Stewart.

John Stewart is an ex-marine, with a big build, so any actor cast in the role would need to be capable of being physically intimidating. He is also an incredibly important hero for DC comics, as he was their first ever black superhero, so bearing that in mind, I believe the actor cast would need to have some prestige attached to their name (sorry Tyrese Gibson).

Who Should Play Green Lantern (John Stewart)?

Idris Elba

Idris Elba is not only the fan favourite for this role, but it seems like he’s the fan favourite for every role at the moment! It is understandable though, he’s a great actor, he’s popular with fanboys, and he has a lot of credibility, not to mention the fact that he looks the part.

Who Should Play Green Lantern (John Stewart)?

Denzel Washington

There are very few actors working right now that you can realistically say have little to no interest in being in a comic book film. Unfortunately for us, Danzel Washington might just be one of them. Some people might think he’s a bit too old for the role, but he’s aging very well, and if you saw The Equalizer you know he can pull off doing action.

Who Should Play Green Lantern (John Stewart)?

Jamie Foxx

Having been a part of 2014’s complete turd of a film, The Amazing Spider-man 2Jamie Foxx might be hesitant to take on another role in a comic book movie. If there is a role for him anywhere however, it’s John Stewart. After that film last year, he may not have too much favour with audiences, but having an Oscar on his shelf might just give him enough credibility to have one more crack at the genre.

Who Should Play Green Lantern (John Stewart)?

Nelsan Ellis

Here’s an actor that doesn’t get enough work, or recognition. Perhaps most famous for playing sassy wiccan cook Lafayette (that show got weird…), he’s been slowly building his movie career over the last few years. Because of that, he’d be a cheap choice for the studio, and would no doubt deliver a great performance.

Who Should Play Green Lantern (John Stewart)?

Corey Hawkins

Corey Hawkins recently made a splash in Straight Outta Compton, a film in which he was no doubt the breakout star. His performance in that has earned him a lot of praise across the board, and it seems obvious that he would be looking to capitalise on that success by joining a big franchise. Perhaps he’s a little too young for the role, however that would mean he’s able to play the role for many years, should the fans take to him.

If you liked any of these choices, feel free to check out some of our other casting articles, such as this one where we cast another Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, or this one where we cast Marvel’s Inhumans.
