we’ve got your back.
What is Star Wars: Rogue One?
For the uninitiated Rogue One will be the first spin-off feature-length film from the Star Wars universe. Think of how in the Marvel Cinematic Universe they have the Avengers, their spin-offs would be the Iron Man or Captain America films etc. The goal is to create a bigger world for new and current characters to flourish AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MAKING MONEY.
A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in the Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One.
This will also be the first Star Wars movie not to feature the Jedi as director Gareth Edwards states at the Star Wars celebration 2015:
It comes down to a group of individuals that don’t have magic powers, that have to bring hope to the galaxy.
Rogue One will be a war film between the Rebels and the Empire. The team behind this film include writers from war films and TV series like Zero Dark Thirty, Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
What is Star Wars Anthology?
This is basically new fancy lingo for ‘spin-off’. There will be the Star Wars Episodes and there will be Star Wars Anthology.
The Episodes will continue the main storyline of Star Wars which includes the original trilogy (Episodes IV, V, VI) and unfortunately the prequels (Episodes I, II, III).
The Star Wars film being released on 18th December 2015 in the UK will be Episode VII and kick-start a new trilogy (including Episodes VIII, IX).
Rogue One however will be the first of the Anthologies. The Anthologies are add-ons to the Episodes which will attempt to fill in the blanks between Episodes and help promote the history behind the Star Wars universe. Anthology films don’t have to be in chronological order, and don’t have to be related to each other. They will attempt to tell separate stories however in the future certain popular Anthologies may get sequels (‘Rogue Two‘ perhaps?).
Where does Rogue One fit in the continuity of Star Wars?
As previously mentioned, the new concept being introduced in Star Wars is Anthologies. This particular Anthology is set between Episodes III and IV. So after the end of the prequels and just before the first Star Wars Episode that was released.
The Star Wars films in Chronological order:
- Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999 release)
- Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002 release)
- Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005 release)
- Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One (2016 release)
- Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977 release)
- Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980 release)
- Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983 release)
