Seeing as 2016 is shaping up to be the end of the world, I thought it would be fitting to do a post-apocalyptic film list. Get your long jackets, shave your head and bring a dog: it’s time for the end of the world.
But first, the rules:
Now obviously, something apocalyptic must have occurred prior to the beginning of the film. Additionally, there must be some form of sci-fi element attached to make this list.
Away, we, go!
I Am Legend
The golden days when Will Smith could hold a film simply by himself and not have to act cool standing on top of burnt cars. This film follows the supposed lone survivor of a virus that has wiped out mankind as he has to battle for survival against not-zombies-not-vampires vampire-zombies with his only companion behind his dog (cries).
Surprisingly a good watch, the best moments are when Will Smith is alone just doing stuff. A true feat, in my eyes, if someone can hold a film by themselves. Although I prefer the alternative ending, still an essential viewing for post-apocalyptic sci-fi.
Children of Men
A world without children may sound like heaven for some, in Children of Men, however, it’s not so fun. Following Clive Should-have-been-Bond Owen as he finds the only pregnant woman in 18 years.
Although a fantastic vision of the future and a mature look at a crisis like this, this film truly excels in its cinematography. Some jaw-dropping scenes not seen before.
28 Days Later
The zombie films of all zombie films. Plus, set in London! Oi! Oi! Danny Boyle is at it again with another style of sci-fi to add to his collection.
If you love zombies, watch this. If you don’t love zombies, watch this.
A real grounded experience from a film that feels like a TV series at the same time, in a good way. A rare look at a vacant London you don’t too often get in films.
Not for the light of heart. This film will stay with you. The need to stay alive is so strong in this. The bond between a father and his son as they experience hell where crazy people are just around the corner.
This will have you feel dull at points, but shock you so dramatically it’ll make up for it. It will be like you’ve been on the road with them.
Time-Travel, Monkeys and post-apocalyptic! I’ll take two! Bruce Willis has to save the day again in the time-travelling post-apocalyptic sci-fi 12 Monkeys.
A film that will surprise you, with an interesting cast and even more fascinating storyline this is require viewing for all sci-fi buffs.
Sometimes when you hear the description of a film do you feel as though it was made for you? That’s how I felt about Snowpiecer.
A train, with presumably all that is left of mankind, split into the figurative classes of the world by carriages with a revolution started by Captain America. Need I say more?
Mad Max: Fury Road
Too good. This film has spoilt me. I don’t think I’ll see action this good again (from a new movie that is).
You won’t be ready for the break-neck speed this film will deliver. A triumph in action and a solid reminder as to why we all love balls-to-the-wall action movies.
One for the kids! But, seriously, this movie is outstanding. Pixar is no stranger to doing good movies but this one, in my opinion, is one of their best.
A lone robot has the duty of cleaning up an empty earth. He falls in love with a visiting robot and an adventure ensues. Yes, yes and more yes.
Reign of Fire
Dragons? Check. Tanks? Check. Matthew McConaughey bald? Check. What more can you want from a film? Where is this film’s reboot I ask!?
Set in modern London, Dragons now rule and have laid waste to what was there before. This ain’t no Elves and Dwarfs type affair, these men fight with tanks and guns.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
This has been featured on many of my lists and for good reason. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes follows on from the same long-named prequel Rise of the Planet of the apes.
This time, however, all the people are dead (hooray). Except, not all of them. We catch up with the top Ape, Caeser, as he tackles balancing leading his own kind, the Apes, and working with the other, the Humans.
There you have. Take note, as when the end of the world happens you will be properly prepared!
