I’m ready. I’m almost too ready for Captain America: Civil War. Bring it on! But, wait a second. Back it up. Let me take a moment to look past the unreal levels of excitement I have for this film. We have Iron Man taking on Captain America. That’s great. Awesome in fact. However, each Marvel film to date has either a solo hero or a team of heroes take on a bad guy and then win. Who is the bad guy in this? Iron Man? Captain America? Hydra (most properly)? And what does a ‘win’ mean for this film? What does it mean for the rest of the MCU?

Furthermore, each Captain America has had huge repercussions for the rest of the MCU. Captain America: The First Avenger brought a man from the past into present day in order to lead The Avengers. Captain America: The Winter Solider saw the end of S.H.I.E.L.D. (except on TV) and how deep-rooted Hydra was throughout the world’s governments. What is in store for the MCU after Civil War?

Somebody dies

Readers of Third Act know my opinion on who should die in Civil War. We’ve also discussed who may die in Civil War in video form (fancy, huh). But regardless of who it may be, if an Avenger dies they’ll be the first one to actually die. This is some contract-ending spin-off-potential-ruining consequences.

Probably a more important question: who killed them? If one of the Avengers killed another, how can they ever be accepted into the group? It’s a possibility that somebody like The Winter Solider may go crazy and kill an Avenger. Other than The Punisher, can we have a murderous Avenger? Wouldn’t they have to face justice themselves resulting in two Avengers going? With the case of The Winter Solider killing somebody, would he have been in control? Will he submit willingly?

End of Hydra?

Perhaps this film won’t be all doom and gloom, perhaps they do make friends in the end. They team-up to face the real threat all along, Hydra. Perhaps Hydra has been pulling strings left-right-and-centre which has led to this division between the Avengers.

By the end of Civil War, Hydra may actually be gone. If the Government-backed side of The Avengers were able to get the world’s Governments support in uprooting the evil organisation of Hydra once and for all, it’ll make room for another evil group to gain some spotlight, and put Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a pickle, which Marvel Studios love to do.

New Avenger teams?

By the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron we were shown a new team of Avengers. The team was composed of Falcon, War Machine, Scarlet Witch and Vision. Will this be the new core team after Civil War? Will the original team disappear into the background until Infinity Wars? If so, will this New Avengers team get their own film? Perhaps one of the secret films to be released.

How many Avengers will there be? We have the Government backed Avengers, who have sided with Iron Man and a secret underground Avengers. Will these two teams spin-off to new properties if differences cannot be overlooked? I sure as hell hope so.

New New Avengers

What about the upcoming standalone films? We have Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man and The Inhumans. Will these guys form into an even newer Avengers? Or will it turn into rolling roster of whoever is available to team-up to face a bigger threat?

Will we end up with potentially four different Avenger teams? O.G. Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, New New Avengers?

Stand it alone?

The assumptions I’ve made so far assume that by the end of Civil War everyone will be friends. Which, of course, may happen. Perhaps the real villain is Hydra who has pitted these heroes against each other, highly probable. But what if they don’t take the easy route out. This is a difference in ideologies.

Captain America doesn’t want Government involvement, whilst Iron Man does. If neither of them budges on their opinion by the end of the film could see the MCU turn back into solo adventures.

Upper hand for Thanos

Which enables Avengers: Infinity Wars to be even more exciting than it already is. If they don’t get along by the time Thanos arrives, what hope is there? This is probably what the smart people at Marvel Studios have wanted from the get-go.

I say, bring it on. Kill a couple of Avengers, make them hate each other. Bring real turmoil to the MCU with this film. Leave no two characters on good terms. Then have Thanos show up and force these heroes to put aside their differences just temporarily to take him on. Considering Infinity Wars will be split into two films, I can imagine the first film having the Avengers lose constantly and not being able to take him on at all. Making it that much sweeter when they do finally defeat him in the finale.

That’s just some thoughts I’ve had about the aftermath of Civil War. I really do think it’ll have a huge knock-on effect to the rest of the MCU.
