This post is part of the Marvel's Phase 3 series.

Age of Ultron has been and gone, you’ve seen Ant-Man, and let’s face it, Marvel’s Phase 2 was awesome, but what’s next? In this series we’re going to take a look at what we currently know about each of the films in Marvel’s Phase 3, discussing what we know from the comics, the already existing films, and of course a bit of speculation. So let’s get right into it, discussing everything we know about Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok.

All About Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok

Overview

This is the third standalone Thor film, and promises to be the best. From what we currently know, it starts exactly where Age of Ultron ends, and it’s going to take place almost entirely on Asgard (the home of Thor and the Asgardians), or at least not on Earth. We should finally get to see a real Asgardian army, lead by Thor, fighting their way through hordes of aliens / monsters.

In the comics

Ragnarok can refer to two things in Marvel comics. Firstly it’s the name of a character from the Civil War story line, who is a robot clone of Thor. I don’t think they’ll be going down that road however, despite the fact that we will be seeing Captain America: Civil War before we see Thor: Ragnarok.

The other Ragnarok in the comics (and in Norse mythology) is basically the apocalypse, in Asgard. Lots of war, lots of drama, and lots of major characters meeting their untimely end. Oh, there’s also a giant wolf and a fire demon in there somewhere. In other words, it’s bad news for Thor.

Who’s in it?

Chris Hemsworth will be returning to play the god of thunder, and we can also expect franchise regulars to return, such as Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Stellan Skarsgård as Eric Selvig, and Kat Dennings as Darcy (unfortunately).

Not being set on Earth, we should also see plenty of Asgardians return, including Idris Elba as Heimdall, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun and Zachary Levi as Fandral. I hope we’ll also get to see Anthony Hopkins return as Odin, although the ending of The Dark World implies otherwise.

What to expect

This is the big one. MCU series producer Kevin Feige has said that Ragnarok is going to do for Thor what The Winter Soldier did for Captain America. This should be all out war between the armies of the nine realms, with Lord of the Rings style action and plenty of plot twists. Outside of the Infinity War films, this should have the most visually impressive action in phase 3.
