The first trailer for Captain America: Civil War has just been released, and in my opinion, it’s far better than anything we’ve seen from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice so far. Obviously not everybody is going to agree with me, but I’ve lined up a few reasons as to why…
1) It’s clearly a sequel – to a film people love
Something that took me by surprise was how much this trailer made the film look like a sequel to Winter Soldier. Even though there have been three films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since then, the story seems to pick up pretty soon after, and that’s a very good choice. The BvS trailer does have some elements that show it as a sequel to Man of Steel, but that film had such mixed reception that it wasn’t a surprise when the trailer focused more on Batman.
2) This is a Captain America film
Many people, including myself, have made the joke that this is Avengers 2.5 (which wouldn’t be a bad thing), but now we’ve seen the trailer it’s clear that this is a Captain America film through and through. We know who our lead is, we know what our story is, everyone else is just a supporting character – even Iron Man.
3) The action
There’s not much action in the Civil War trailer, but what we do get to see is incredibly exciting and perfectly filmed. The action in BvS doesn’t look bad, but it’s all shot in the dark, and is heavily CGI’d to the point that it looks like a video game, and this is coming from a CGI defender AND a video game fan.
4) Think about who we haven’t seen
Ok, the BvS trailer did leave some things out, Aquaman and potentially Doomsday, but they’re both massively overshadowed by this list: Spider-Man (I could stop there), Crossbones, Baron Zemo, whoever Martin Freeman is playing, Vision and Ant-Man. We’ve also barely seen Black Panther, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch, War Machine, and no doubt a load of other characters. How is it possible to make a trailer that good without showing that many cool characters?
5) It did the impossible
Civil War is one of my most anticipated films of 2016, and somehow, a trailer six months in advance has made me even more excited – by surprising me. Dawn of Justice is also one of my most anticipated films of 2016, but all the trailer did was show me exactly what I already knew was going to happen – Batman and Superman are going to fight.
Which of these trailer do you like the most? Do you agree with anything I’ve said? Share any thoughts in the comments.
