It’s no secret, we here at Third Act love Tom Hardy. Not only is he one of the best actors working today, but he’s brought us some of the most interesting and different performances (and films) of recent years. This week sees the release of Legend, which could be his best performance to date, as he’s playing twins Ronnie and Reggie Kray, the who lead a criminal empire in London during the 1960’s. So to celebrate his great talent, here are 10 things you didn’t know about Tom Hardy.
1 – Not just an actor
Hardy almost wasted his talent when he briefly became a model in 1998. Luckily, it didn’t work out.
2 – A true villain?
He’s the only actor to play a bad guy in both the Star Trek franchise (in Star Trek Nemesis) and the Batman franchise (in The Dark Knight Rises).
3 – Interesting by nature
He once said ‘I love to do things I haven’t done before’. This mentality is probably why his career has been so interesting for us to watch as audiences. It’s also nice to know he’s going to keep going!
4 – The most talented class ever?
At drama school, he was in the same class as Michael Fassbender, an actor Hardy said was the most talented in the school.
5 – Off screen problems
He’s struggled with Alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction in the past, but has been sober for more than 10 years.
6 – Max
Hardy named his childhood dog Max because he was a fan of the film Mad Max. For the two people who don’t know, he later went on to play Mad Max in the film Mad Max: Fury Road.
7 – Erm… Joel?
He’s been replaced by actors named Joel twice in the last few years, once by Joel Kinnaman in Suicide Squad, and Joel Edgerton in Black Mass, both of whom he’d previously worked with, Kinnaman in Child 44, and Edgerton in Warrior.
8 – Gary? This is getting silly now…
His acting idol is Gary Oldman, somebody he’s now worked with four times, in The Dark Knight Rises, Child 44, Lawless and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
9 – Fighting style
He’s a big fan of real life martial arts Jiu Jitsu and Capoeira, which only makes him more scary.
10 – He’s a people person
He once said one of the nicest things ever: ‘I love people. People are lovely creatures. I’m one myself. I love to see people happy’. Awwwww.
