Set to become the highest grossing music biopic of all time, Straight Outta Compton has been released to both critical and commercial success. A lot of people are seeing this is not just a great film, but one about an important time in the music industry, and the formation of current American culture. It’s so important that Dr. Dre (not a real doctor) has decided to release an album for the first time in 16 years! You get that one for free… This being such an interesting release, we thought we would bring you 10 things you didn’t know about Straight Outta Compton, the movie, not the album.
1 -If you thought 16 years was long
This film already has a… healthy running time, being just shy of 2 hours 20 minutes, but the original cut was over an hour longer, at 3 and a half hours. DVD extras?
2 – Tip of the hat
In the opening scene one of the characters is seen wearing a Chicago White Sox hat. This scene is set in 1986, but the logo seen on the hat was only adopted by the White Sox in 1991.
3 – Hair (and budget) raising
Each of the Jheri Curl wigs used in this film cost around $15,000 to make! Surely it would’ve been easier to just do it to the actual actors hair?
4 – A true portrayal
To help them get into character, the actors re-recorded Straight Outta Compton (the album) in its entirety.
5 – Cinematic universe?
In the background of the scene in Eazy-E’s studio, there is a poster for the film Child’s Play 2. Could this be hinting at a future crossover? No. No it isn’t.
6 – Good direction
The director of this film, F. Gary Gray directed the real life Ice Cube in the film Friday.
7 – A weighty role
In order to look like his character Eazy-E, actor Jason Mitchell consumed 4,000 calories a day. On the other hand, O’Shea Jackson Jr could only have 1,200.
8 – Marshall-ing the troops
An early version of the script featured a scene with Eminem, a role the studio wanted to be played by Ansel Elgort. Spoiler alert, this scene never happened.
9 – Dropping (F) bombs
The ‘F’ word (or variations of it) is said a little under 300 times in this film, which somehow makes it only sixteenth on the all time list.
10 – Actual Ties
The 1992 LA riots are featured in this film. O’Shea Jackson Jr (who plays Ice Cube, his real life father) has already signed on for his next film, which focusses on the LA riots.
