With the introduction of Baymax in Big Hero 6, released this weekend, I shall be looking at other sidekicks in Disney movies. I will be looking specifically at Disney animated studio films, so this won’t include the Marvel cinematic universe or any other Disney owned property, as that can be saved for another list .
Thumper has always been a great friend to Bambi from childhood and teaches him how to speak and walk. “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothin’ at all” is one of the life lessons that Thumper taught us. He’s also super cute, which totally makes up for his curious and cheeky nature.
He was given to Hercules as a baby by his father. Even though he is loyal, he does get a bit jealous when Hercules meets Meg and does try to break them up. Plus, Pegasus, is a flying horse, made from clouds, by Zeus!
Even though Tinker Bell tried to get Wendy killed throughout most of the film, and accidentally tells Hook where Pan’s hideout is, coming across as being very spiteful and jealous, she redeemed herself by drinking poison and saving everyone from Hook. She is a good sidekick because she showed that she is willing to die for her friends, and that she has a huge crush on Pan!
His childlike wonder and love for life is truly infectious. He likes summer, warm hugs and all things hot. He doesn’t quite understand what happens when ice and heat meet. He’s always in a good mood, surprisingly has great wisdom, and is truly selfless, as he’s willing to melt to make sure Anna isn’t alone. “Some people are worth melting for”.
Vanellope von Schweetz
Like a lot of sidekicks, Vanellope can be quite loud and obnoxious, and always has a witty comeback. But you can tell the strong relationship that she and Ralph have, besides, who can insult you more than your best friend?
Pascal may be small but he doesn’t show any fear and he is quite a dominating presence. He is a total badass! He will do anything to make sure that Rapunzel gets to live her dream, and doesn’t let a handsome thief or an angry horse to get in their way.
Sebastian is King Triton’s right hand crab, and is ordered to spy on Ariel and keep her out of trouble. He then gets dragged into her adventure on land. He also sings Under the Sea, probably one of the best Disney songs ever!
Mushu is the funniest character in the film, and acts almost as Mulan’s conscience. He’s the one that shows her that it doesn’t matter who you are, if you have self-belief you can achieve anything. Mushu may be the size of a lizard but he has the heart and the attitude of a dragon, and is excellently voiced by Eddie Murphy.
Timon & Pumbaa
I know that this is technically two choices, but you cannot separate them. They are by far the best characters in The Lion King, and they saved Simba’s life and practically raised him. They also taught us ‘Hakuna Matata’, the sentiment that we should all be living our lives by, especially me. Another reason these two are awesome is the fact they are based on the characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildernstern.
Let’s be honest, Aladdin would never have escaped from any of his adventures without Genie there to help him out. He was also voiced by the late, great Robin Williams, which meant that he wasn’t only charismatic, but amazingly funny. This makes him my personal best Sidekick.
Let me know if I have missed any of your favourite Disney sidekicks in the comments below.
